Roskilde Cathedral

Roskilde lies on the island of Zealand, Denmark. The city's early importance is evident from the fact that the Roskilde Cathedral was the only cathedral in Zealand until the 20th century. Built in the 12th and 13th centuries, it was the first Gothic cathedral to be built of brick and its construction encouraged the spread of this style throughout northern Europe. The cathedral is the burial site for Danish monarchs and is a major tourist attraction with more than 125,000 visitors annually. Since 1995, the cathedral has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The first postcard is from Postcrossing, which shows the south (side) view of the cathedral. Apart from the great architecture, blue sky and fresh air are always appreciated, that’s my most impression about the northern Europe. Thank you very much Genek, for this great card! The second one is from my Danish friend Peter, shows different aspects of the city Roskilde including the former city hall, Skuldelev ships as well as the great Cathedral too! The stamps Peter used are wonderful too, much appreciated !

An interesting story behinds the card

My friend Jiayi , from China, is a very lucky man! He is the winner of the best stamp competition organized by Posta of Faroe Islands in 2012. As a reward, he is invited to Faroe Islands for a one-week trip. He arrived firstly in Copenhagen, the capital city of Denmark, and met our friend, Mr. Peter Gørtz-Christiansen. Peter is very friendly, he shown Jiayi around the city and then they had coffee together. This postcard was written together by them there! Jiayi wrote (in Chinese): “Copenhagen, sunny, 32 degree. I am drinking coffee with Peter”, while Peter wrote “Hi, Hu , Jiayi and I are having coffee, going to see the Little Mermaid”. I am very happy to receive such a valuable postcard which witnesses the friendship between postcard lovers from different countries! I enjoy postcard mostly from it.
