Recognized by the United Nations as part of Azerbaijan, the Armenian-populated region Nagorno-Karabakh is a de facto independent republic although it is recognized only by three other non-UN states. The republic issues its own stamps with the country name as “Republic of Mountainous Karabakh”. International mails are carried out by Haypost through Yerevan without any problem (of course except the case with Azerbaijan).
Many thanks to my friend Sergey for this rare postcard sent from Stepanakert, the capital of Nagorno-Karabakh. It shows the Gandzasar Monastery built during the 13th century. Monasteries in Caucasus are always very attractive to me! Two nice matching stamps are used, much appreciated!
